North VS South
The North and South emerged as two distinct reasons because they had various differences. These differences included the geography, economy, societal differences, and even their transportation methods. In this essay, I'll explain as to what these differences entail.
One of the most striking differences between the North and the South was the climate and geography. In the North, they had long freezing winters to contrast their short hot humid summers. They also had mostly plains and thin rocky soil, unsuitable for good farming. The eastern shores mostly consisted of jagged coasts, but had hundreds of bays and inlets that were perfect for harbors. In the North, a man named Dawit Clinton made the Erie Canal possible. Upon the canal’s completion, $15 million worth of goods traveled the canal, increasing their value by 95%. New York City became the largest and most successful port in the country. Along the canal sprung up towns, along with another one of North’s point of success, called textile mills. Improved drastically by Francis Cabot Lowell in 1815, which were using machines to spin cotton into cloth. Many young women worked in these mills, called 'Lowell girls'. These young women often taught themselves to read and write within the mill, supplying themselves the proper tools to strike against their lowered wages. Which were already at around $2 per week. By the 1830’s, steam engines were created power to supply these mills so that they weren't restricted to rivers to supply their energy to them. Because of the popularity of these machines, many of these factory owners were very rich. The South, on the other hand, produced agriculture based products to profit off of. One of these major profits was cotton, which was more profitable successful than all of the other crops combined. All of this was only successful because of the invention of the cotton gin.
