Fitzgerald presents the ideas of not living in the past, and knowing when enough is enough. He does this through Gatsby having this perfect image of the past Daisy, and still trying to get her to fall for him after she has a family and obligations. The obligations being Tom and her daughter along with her image of a loyal undivoerced woman. In The Great Gatsby, Fitsgerrald shows the effects of not leting go and its negativity. The effects of living in the past prevent Gatsby from conecting with Daisy beacuse she changed. Daisy had a family an image to represent. Gatsby dreamed of the future, “ believed in the green light … Tommorow we will run faster, stretch our arms out further.” (Fitzgerald 180). when people believe in something the way Gatsby did about Daisy we struggle to let go. When you work hard for something that you truly want, and you get as close as Gatsby, it gets to be like there is no other choice. Gatsby had felt so close to the one thing he wanted the green light at the end of the dock. “Gatsby Believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us.” (Fitzgerald 180). The green light was Daisy, and the future he wanted with her. He worked to become rich shady or not he worked day and night for it. Gatsby did this in an effort to Get back with daisy.
