“Not Slytherin, eh?” Slytherin has long been debated as to whether it is the house of villains, or just simply stereotyped and misunderstood. They have been labelled as the bad guys of the Harry Potter universe, but is it true? One of the greatest wizards of all time, the Great Merlin himself, was from Slytherin, there are villains who weren’t sorted into Slytherin, but rather into other houses, and their core values are not to just be cunning, there are many other respected traits. Merlin the Great was a Slytherin, and is regarded as an honourable hero. In fact, Merlin was so beloved that an award was created in his name and honor. The Order of Merlin has three classes: the First Class Order is given ‘for acts of outstanding bravery or distinction’ in magic; the Second Class is given for ‘achievement or endeavor beyond the ordinary’; and the Third Class is awarded to those who ‘have contributed to our store of knowledge or entertainment.’ All of this is according to Pottermore in an article “Order of Merlin” written by J.K.
