Not Your Typical Woman Imagine going back to the years 1558-1603. During this time period, you would have to submit to males, you are considered the weaker sex. If you were lucky enough, you would be able to receive a limited education if your parents could afford it. If your parents could not afford an education, you focused on house chores. When it was time to get married, your parents would choose someone for you to marry, even if you didn’t actually love your future husband. In Shakespeare’s play, Macbeth, Lady Macbeth does not portray the stereotypical Elizabethan woman, which would be considered shocking to the common woman. Women in the Elizabethan era were considered the weaker sex physically and emotionally. “As a group, English women have enjoyed fewer rights, fewer privileges, less wealth, less influence in spheres of power, and less control over domestic affairs, than English men.”(Stretton). She also plans on going to the three witches in order to try and sane Macbeth again, later in the play. She might of tried to call upon Satanic forces in order to encourage Macbeth to kill Duncan. This is against the stereotypical Elizabethan women because they were involved in religious activities. Women that wanted to go into the literature field were limited in their writings. However, they were allowed to write about religious topics (Sharnette). Lady Macbeth does not submit to her husband, which is one of the main roles of an Elizabethan woman. She has not borne any children, and if she did, she did not try as much as a typical Elizabethan woman. Lady Macbeth also tries to deceive others. She calls on evil spirits, she should be more of a religious woman if she was following the stereotype.
