Pho is a Vietnamese dish that is culturally significant to Wichita. It is a dish that is appreciated by families and friends, some that I know personally, and many that I do not know at all. Our reading of Notes From a Young Black Chef by Kwame Onwuachi helped me see a similar relationship between pho and the Asian community in Wichita and Kwame's own Black community and soul food. The reading showed me the importance of food in the black community and so I felt inspired to learn more about the cultural significance of pho in my community. This number is very high. In Tulsa, Oklahoma, a city with a size and population similar to Wichita, only 12 restaurants serve pho. Given that Wichita has 50% more Pho restaurants than Tulsa, and given that this statistic is similar in other cities of similar size in the Midwest, it is unsurprising to claim that pho is a significant part of Wichita culture
Harry Street in Southeast Wichita is a capital for pho. Five pho restaurants alone call this one street their home, along with many other Asian-inspired restaurants. This hotspot for pho unveils the large Asian and Vietnamese population in East Wichita that has popularized and sustained pho’s place within the city. Not only is pho a popular food for Asian students, but it can also be a popular pastime. On a similar level as boba, Asian students often socialize over a bowl of pho. Given that students can be categorized as young adults, their love for pho shows a glimpse of their family life. I have been told multiple stories by my friends of how they grew up eating pho everyday and some of my friends work at their family’s pho restaurants. One organization that is composed of a large proportion of Vietnamese students is the Chi Sigma Tau fraternity. This organization ran a fundraiser event on February 22nd which had its main focus on the importance of pho in our community. They served pho at $10 a bowl outside of the Rhatigan Student Center and made sure that they chose a day when it was cold outside. Pho is most popular during the winter seasons for its ability to warm the soul with its broth, so they run the fundraiser every year in
