Bernadine Conklin Ms. Gross/Mrs. Abrams Quantitative project Section 3 20 October 2015 EAN-13 Check digits and codes are very important to the function and efficiency of a successful society. Whether it be the credit card codes or even looking at barcodes so an item is victoriously scanned. An important one that is used is the EAN Which stand for The European Article Numbering Code or even EAN-13 which is used for the identification of retail products. This contains both the 12 digit data of the product and the 1 check digit naming it a barcode of a numerical value of 13 .This was originally based off the old code of UPC-A (Universal Product Code), it then became the new standard of numbering codes. This is a lot more unique because the manufacturer can sign any code to and product without informing another organization or group. The only limitation on developing their own unique code is that they must not overlap with an already developed product code which is easily avoidable. The check digit is also essential for an effective EAN-13 because it catches incorrect sequences of the EAN-13 codes that are produced. So how it works is that it is assigned so that the barcode is then verified so that the code is scanned correctly in certain situations. Whether it be a misprint or defect in the speed of the scans. The check digit is determined by the already produced barcode. The method to find the check digit is represented in the following from the website of EAN-13 symbology which is basically summarized as follows, first the to determine the valid EAN-13 code markup all of the odd position on the code as well as all of the even ones. This will make it a lot easier in calculating the actual digit. The one must take all the numbers in the odd position and add them up then multiple that solution by three. After that step is complete one must take all of the numbers from the even positions then add them up to produce a solution. Once both of these steps are complete take both of the answers and add them together. Once that is completed and if it is a number divisible by 10 then the check digit would be 0 seeing that the overall product of the barcode must be a number divisible by ten. If it is says 65 then the check digit must 5 to make the number 70 which is evenly divided by
