Believing in religious beliefs has always led to some form of conflict throughout history. In Number the Stars, written by Lois Lowery, the year is currently 1943, the same time period in which World War II is still raging on. The novel revolves around a ten-year-old girl, Annemarie Johansen, who lives in Copenhagen, Denmark with her parents and younger sister. Annemarie’s best friend, Ellen Rosen, also lives in the same apartment building with the Johansens and is a part of a Jewish household. During this period, many Jews living on the lands controlled by Germany were searched for by German soldiers, Nazis, and were sent to concentration camps.
Being that the Rosens are a Jewish household, the Rosens will most definitely flee from the country.

All was silent until a few Nazi soldiers barged in questioning why a group of people had gathered unusually. When Annemarie and her mother explained the situation to the soldiers they started examining every inch and corner of the house, thoroughly to make sure that they weren’t misleading them. A soldier, on the other hand, was suspicious of why the coffin wasn’t arranged how it should traditionally be placed, since he was familiar with the customs of the Denmark people. However, Annemarie’s mother swiftly stepped in, explaining the reason why the coffin wasn’t how it should traditionally be arranged and intimated them to leave them alone. After the soldiers left, Peter Neilson opened the coffin. To Ellen and Annemarie’s surprise, the coffin of Great-aunt Birdie wasn’t placed with a body, as you would suspect. Instead, the coffin was filled with blankets and clothing that was then distributed to the people who were present. Peter then lead a small group of people to Uncle Henrick’s boat in the harbor, telling Annemarie’s mother to also go to Uncle Henrick’s boat after a few minutes had passed. Before Peter left, he left an up most important package to Mr. Rosen to deliver to Uncle Hendrick and then faced Annemarie hoping that they would meet again in the near
