Sarah Ruhl 10-6-15 Muth 1st This paper outlines several paths that I may take to acheave my career goals. My dream is to work as a medical professional. I am still unsure whether that means becoming a nurse or a physician. In this paper I will describe to you one priority plan and two of my backup plans. The out lines and requirements for these plans will also be described. My priority plan is to become a doctor of internal medicine. If that does not work out my first backup plan is to become a family nurse practitioner. My second backup plan is to become a dialysis nurse. The colleges that fit my preferences to become a doctor best are Austin Peay State University and Quillen College of Medicine. Austin Peay has …show more content…
32 in The United States, according to NurseJournal.org. That is a higher ranking than both Yale University and Johns Hopkins University. Once at APSU I will major in pre-medicine. Following earning a bachelor's degree in pre-medicine I must take the Medical College Admission Test also known as the MCAT. This is a multiple-choice exam that covers areas involving critical thinking, problem solving, scientific principles and writing. After passing the MCAT the next step is to register at Quillen College of Medicine. A Doctor of Medicine (MD) program takes four years to complete. The first step is becoming a registered nurse (RN). I would need a bachelor of science in nursing degree from an accredited college. I would choose Tennessee Technological University to become a registered nurse because it is more affordable than Austin Peay. TTU is also closer to some of my family than APSU. Graduates of nursing programs must pass a standardized national examination and also obtain a state license. The next step is to gain experience in a clinic atmosphere. The last 2 steps are to earn a graduate degree and obtain a state certificate. Most states require nurse practitioners to be licensed in addition to their RN license, which is granted by the state nursing board. The general requirements include a valid RN license, graduation from an approved nurse practitioner master's degree program, and certification from a recognized nurse practitioner credentialing agency. If push comes to shove I can become a dialysis technician. Dialysis technicians operate dialysis machines and work with patients suffering from kidney disease. As a dialysis technicians I would work closely with dialysis nurses and nephrology doctors. Dialysis technicians usually complete a 1 year certificate program. To become a dialysis technician, candidates must have a high school diploma or a GED. They also must speak fluent English and be
