My zeal to become a nurse especially a nurse for the elderly was established after I completed my first work placement in a residential home. Though the college I attended required students to do the placement in three different health and social care setting. I was pleased with my placement coordinator's idea to allow me to do my work placement twice in the residential home. I was much grateful to have had the opportunity to serve and have much experience in the care setting. During my time at the residential home, I enjoyed caring, talking, supporting and creating a relationship with residents suffering from all sorts of dementia. Although this was challenging, my passion to support and help promotes dignity and respect for this people pushed me to extend my time at the placement. Following instructions from senior staffs and working with the team made me appreciate how important to work with a team and other professionals. Whilst at the care home I also learnt how to meet deadlines, to prioritise, good timekeeping skills, communication and patience. I have achieved Distinctions in Physiological Disorders, Promoting Health, Dealing with Challenging Behaviour, Caring For Older People and Dementia Care. The key skills I have learnt throughout my placements are communication, courage, commitment, compassion, competence and care. These are the 6Cs which are a set of values that underpin compassion in practice by the NHS. I The course I plan to study at University is the ideal place to build on this existing knowledge and put the theory into practice through placements.
