Competency Differences of Baccalaureate and Associate Degree Prepared Nurses There are three main approaches to entering the nursing field as a registered nurse. The hospital based diploma program has largely gone out of favor; there remains less than 75 diploma programs in the United States (National League for Nursing, 2013). More nurses favor entering the profession via the Associates degree route (38% of the workforce) while nursing administrators want more BSN prepared nurses. Why would administrators want BSN prepared nurses when they come with a higher cost in wages? Why did the IOM recommend increasing the percentage of Baccalaureate prepared nurses in hospitals to 80% (Institute of Medicine, 2010)?

However, the primary reason why I want to become a nurse is because of past influences. My mother, and both grandmothers have all been in the medical field as nurses, but the one person who has had the most influence on me, is my doctor, Chris Chapman. He is like a grandfather to me, and truly has had an impact on my life. He has been my doctor for as long as I can remember, due to my mother being his nurse.
When I was young, I realized that I love being able to bring a smile to somebody’s face. I currently work in a retirement home, I love enjoy making the residents feel as though they are important as well as making sure their day is as great as it can possibly be. I have never had a resident unhappy to see me, in fact, it is quite the opposite. When a resident in need of assistance lays their eyes on me, their faces light up with excitement because they know their day got easier and they have someone to talk to.. Not only do I love helping people, but I also enjoy studying anatomy and physiology. Because I love helping people as well as the study of anatomy and physiology, I would love to go into healthcare in the future.

I was thinking to become a nurse when I was visited my son’s High School Career Day when an APRN gave a speech that inspired me to become a nurse. The APRN had double major in Nurse Midwifery and Family Nurse Practitioner, and she appeared to enjoy her profession. Her admiration coupled with motivation from my family background developed my interest to pursue a career in nursing profession. Several years ago I earned another degree in health care that I challenged myself by obtaining new experiences, and thus developed my education and professional skills. I have been working for several years in the hospital practicing caring skills in different fields of health care profession, as EKG technician, going from Med-Surg, ER, ICU and others.
As a future nurse major, I feel committed to engage in activities that deal with serving others. My lifetime goal consists of becoming a registered nurse, and later on a certified nurse anesthetist. My high expectation of a career is based on the association I've had with a disease hardship in my family. Consequently, my highest reward would be to soothe the literal pain of a human being.
In life I always wanted to become a Registered Nurse. When I was younger I use to dress up as a nurse and play like I was doctoring on my younger siblings. When I was younger all I knew is I wanted to become a nurse, as I got older I realized what kind of nurse I wanted to become. I have many goals I want to achieve throughout my life. However, the biggest goal I have set for me to accomplish is to become a pediatric nurse. I have been dreaming of this career since I was about eight years old, mainly because of my best friend. She was diagnosed with level four Cerebral Palsy at birth. The first thing that pulled me towards nursing was the way she would cheer up whenever I encouraged her.
I have begun to realize that I have yet to begin my life: everything up until now I have considered practice. Every day I question myself, “When will the right time come to do this or do that?” Now I realize that the answer to that is now. Now seems to be the time to start taking life seriously and making responsible choices. I’ve realized I have come to a point in my life where I choose what I do with my future, but need to choose something that will make me happy.
