Acting as the team leader during my clinical shift was both enjoyable and overwhelming all at the same time. With this being my last semester of nursing school, I have grown into my role and responsibilities as a student nurse caring for a single patient. Being given the opportunity to act as team leader for a day was an incredibly different experience. I did not have any patients of my own. Instead, I had to get prepped on all the patients of my class mates. I helped with assessments, medication administration and with whatever else they needed my help with. My classmates were all located in different areas of the hospital and some on different floors. So, I stayed very busy running from one area to another. Being able to communicate with a team member in an accurate and professional manner is a must. As a head nurse, one must always consider the needs and even style of nursing care from that nurse to his/her client. Head nursing is all about leading in a professional and caring way for the best interest of the client, but I realized something else about my experience. While our main concern is that of the patient, sometimes special care and attention needs to be given to our team. During my shift as team leader a situation came about where I needed to make time for a classmate that needed emotional support that day. I took the time to sit with her and listen as she talked about something very private to her. I knew I had to visit my other classmates, but she needed someone to talk with at that moment before she was able to get her focus back to her patient. A team leader is someone who provides guidance, instruction, direction and leadership to a group for the purpose of achieving a key result. There was so much to do and I stayed so busy that the day just flew
