This is a 2-part objective involving community assessments, emergency preparedness, and professionalism. If a disaster occurs, health and emergency management professionals should be prepared to lead their teams in meeting the needs of the affected public (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2017). Without nurse managers possessing this competency, it may lead to failure of handling the disaster adequately. Accurate community assessments, allow for health professionals to prioritize their response to meet the needs of the entire community (CDC, 2017). Being prepared and demonstrating values/behaviors of professionalism, during catastrophe, will allow for trust among the staff and community. A community care director is appointed to lead EHMC’s Population Health Department in conducting this assessment. This department attempts to meet four goals to assist with the community needs, that being, “increasing access to health care through population health management, promoting behavioral health, improving health status through chronic disease and care management, and increasing access to immunizations and reducing infectious diseases” (Englewood Hospital and Medical Center [EHMC], 2017 pg. 1). It appears that an assessment report is published every 3 years, but an implementation strategy plan, containing various criteria, is done in between these published assessment reports. As stated before, this assessment report assists in preparing for disasters. Since EHMC has determined the needs of their community, they can accurately respond to these needs during emergencies. This is not the only way EHMC prepares of emergencies. Staff is required to attend training done by incident command centers, which “is a management system designed to enable effective and efficient domestic incident management by integrating a combination of facilities, equipment, personnel, procedures, and communications operating within a common organizational structure” (Federal Emergency Management Agency [FEMA], 2017 p.
