I have always believed that the day I found my mission in life for a career, I would never work a day in my life after that. The work I would be doing would not only be my mission, but, it would be a passion, an accomplishment, and a life-long dream. I have been privileged to have a father that has opened up three nursing homes in the Dayton area and I had the pleasure at a young age of working in one of these nursing homes for ten years. I started working part-time at the age of fourteen only a few days a week doing activities in the Alzheimer’s and dementia Unit which is known as the Special Care Unit. I began working at a Genesis Health Care facility in April of 2014 as the Homestead Program Director which is their Alzheimer’s and dementia care director. My task when hired was to completely renovate the classic dementia unit into what is now called the Homestead Unit. This 26 bed secured unit, which was branded in October of 2014, was converted into patient-centered care. The objective of patient-centered care is to discover every detail large and small about each person and then creating a world that is as familiar and as close to home-like as possible. I want to absorb knowledge of diverse mental health diseases and disorders and learn how to counsel not only those who suffer from these conditions but also their support systems as well. When I receive my Master’s Degree, I would like to work with those who have been diagnosed with a mental health disorder with a focus in Alzheimer’s and dementia disease. I am motivated everyday working with these individuals, and in order for myself to have a more profound impact on these people, it is necessary for me to further my
