A. Nursing Theory The nursing theory I relate to in my nursing career is the Faye Abdullah’s Twenty-One Nursing Problems Theory. This theory was progressive for the time when nurses were taught that diagnosis was not part of their role as a nurse. This theory combines the concepts of health, nursing problems, and problem solving. It focuses on the nursing practice and the patient as an individual. It is broken down into ten steps to identify the patient’s problems and eleven steps to develop a plan of care for the patient. The Texas Board of Nursing (BON) has been regulating nurses for more than 100 years since its establishment in 1909 by legislation to regulate the safe practice of nurses. The BON is responsible for issuing licenses, enforcing the rules and regulations concerning continuing education and conducting investigations,approves schools of nursing and assuring that nurses possess the knowledge needed to perform their jobs at the highest standards(Texas Board of Nursing, 2013). The American Nurses Association (ANA) was founded in 1896 to advance the nursing profession by fostering high standards in nursing practice, promoting safe and ethical work environments, bolstering the health and well being of nurses, and advocating on health issues that affect nurses and the public (American Nurses Association, 2017). The BON is mandatory for license and practice as a nurse. The ANA is a voluntary organization that you can chose to join but your license is not dependent on …show more content…

The BON issues me a license to practice and monitors my conduct and practices as a nurse. Because of this I stay up on the latest information pertinent to doing my job and follow the rules set forth by the BON so that I may continue to pursue my career. The ANA is voluntary but by following the recommendations that are published it ensures that I am upholding the standards of my practice and maintaining an ethical work environment.

C3. Requirements for Professional License Renewal The Texas Board of Nursing requires that I renew my license every two years and that I maintain at least 20 continuing education classes in my area of practice. I must have at least 2 contact hours in nursing jurisprudence and nursing ethics every third time I renewand 2 contact hours in older adult and geriatric care every 2 years. Because I work in an emergency room I was required to take a one-time class in forensic evidence collection (Texas Board of Nursing, 2013).
