The point of these oral presentations was analyze how the authors of the texts presented their persuasive arguments. The goal of my group in particular was to read the text carefully, more than once, and break down techniques that the author uses to make himself more credible, logical, and emotionally connected to the reader. My partners and I looked for patterns in the author’s writing style and tried to understand why he chose the words he used. In, What You Eat Is Your Business by, Radley Balko, it is evident that Balko uses humor and rhetorical questions to make his point that literally what you eat should be your own business.

In Michael Pollan’s essay “Escape from the Western Diet,” he directly to Americans about the western diet and why he believes they need to escape from it. The reason Americans should escape the western diet is to avoid the harmful effects associated with it such as “western diseases” (Pollan, 420). To support his view on the issue, Pollan describes factors of the western diet that dictate what Americans believe they should eat. These factors include scientists with their theories of nutritionist, the food industry supporting the theories by making products, and the health industry making medication to support those same theories. Overall, Pollan feels that in order to escape this diet, people need to get the idea of it out of their heads.

Food, Inc., a documentary that demonstrates the current and growth method of food production since the 1950’s, is designed to inform Americans about a side of the food industry. Food Inc. also used persuasion to demonstrates some components of pathos, logos, and ethos while uncovering the mysterious side of the food industry in America. Robert Kenner, the director of Food, Inc., made this film for a purpose. Uncovering the hidden facts and secrets behind the food industry in America.
Rhetorical Analysis: “Why McDonald’s Fries Taste So Good” When it comes to writing, the hardest part is getting the audience interested in what you have to say. Four techniques writers use to attract readers are the use of ethos, logos, pathos and Kairos in their text. Ethos is a method used to gain trust in the author. Logos uses facts and statistics to add credibility to the author. Pathos is used in stories or experiences to connect the readers emotionally to the text.

On the 8th of this month, I attended a lecture in the UA Poetry Center presented by Dr. Jerome Dotson (an instructor in Africana Studies). The speaker, who obtained a MA in African American Studies and a PhD in History, presented information for this particular lecture on the diets of slaves, and specifically within that, the connotation of pork in their meals. Dr. Dotson began the talk with a brief discussion of ‘roots’ and played a video of Kunta Kinte’s visual explanation of the meaning of food in a slave’s life. The video highlighted what slaves ate, which consisted mostly of grits, roughly ground corn, and pork. Kinte’s video also presented yet another tragedy behind slavery—the nature of chronic underfeeding and hunger.
In both David Zinczenko’s “Don’t Blame The Eater” and “ Radley Balko’s “What You Eat is Your Business”, the argument of obesity in America is present and clear from opposing viewpoints. Both articles were written in the early 2000’s, when the popular political topic of the time was obesity and how it would be dealt by our nation in the future. While Zinczenko argues that unhealthy junk food is an unavoidable cultural factor, Balko presents the thought that the government should have no say in it’s citizens diet or eating habits. Zinczenko’s article was written with the rhetorical stratedgy of pathos in mind.
According to recent polls, approximately 3% of Americans admit to consuming fast-food at least once per day. This number, although it may appear small, it accounts for 9.5 million citizens across the United States who are unashamed of chowing down on a quick meal. Unfortunately, due to this consumerization, obesity and other like-minded illnesses have risen in recent years. The effects are costly and capable of making people pay the ultimate price: their life.

These people do their part to participate in the agricultural act of eating that Wendell Berry talks about in The Pleasures of Eating. Throughout my research for my argumentative essay, I have come to a conclusion that labels on foods are confusing for most people, they are not clear enough and they make people second guess what they are buying. This problem has caused people to have real life issues and has caused this world to make some problems even bigger. I want these sources to help me argue that this is a big issue and that there is way to fix it. My research goals are to find sources that will provide the meaning of each words on the labels, discuss what problems these labels cause such as people to ruining their healthy lifestyle, causing people to have trouble finding out if they are allergic to the food, and causing people to waste more food. “Let your food be your medicine and your medicine be your food” (Hardy, 2006). The Greeks followed this idea by the philosopher Hippocrates, but today’s society does not take the message seriously. A majority of people eat harmful foods and do not receive the nutrition they need to stay healthy. There are a number of reasons why nutrition is lacking. A lot of teens and college students eat snacks that are not healthy such as chips, pop, candy, etc.
Action must be taken by the food industry in order to start eliminating the problems that are causing the society to deteriorate. There are countless health issues within America that continue to grow due to the fact that the food industry is not regulating the food being provided and sole enough. Obesity and being overweight are one of the many social issues that can be linked back to the food industry. While it is true that there are cases of obesity and being overweight due to lack of exercise or genetics, it is primarily the food that cause people to gain excess weight. So many foods nowadays contain surplus amounts of calories, fats, and sugar which have a direct correlation to weight gain.
