Dear ___________ Internship Director and Selection Committee: Life experience is what inspired me to become a dietitian. I originally applied to Indiana University with the intent to major in journalism. Shortly after receiving my acceptance letter I realized that I had developed a much stronger interest in the field of nutrition. This newfound interest came from issues that arose in my immediate family. My nine-year-old sister was labeled and placed into the category of “overweight” by her peers and our family physician. My aunt was experiencing an extremely difficult pregnancy due to gestational diabetes. I was learning to adjust my diet after discovering I had developed an intolerance to lactose. For the duration of the eight weeks I did everything from coming up with a theme and a menu that would appeal to guests, to advertising the event campus wide and figuring out the best form of service. I was also responsible for scheduling the labor needed to work the event and ordering food, linen and décor. I spent the days leading up to the event prepping and cooking the food as well as setting up the room. One of my greatest strengths is that I am always open-minded. This aspect of my personality has been a great benefit to me as an undergraduate student as it has allowed me to be open to trying different extracurricular activities, traveling new places and reaching outside of my comfort zone. My weakness is that I can be extremely hard on myself. If I get a ‘B’ on an exam I beat myself up about it, instead of focusing on that fact that I completed the test to my best ability. This is something I strive to improve each day. My hard work in and out of the classroom has allowed me to achieve my personal goals so far, but I still have more goals I wish to achieve. First, I hope to receive an internship as the next step toward becoming a Registered Dietitian. Next, I hope to gain a position as a dietitian in a hospital setting, where I will utilize the skills I have accumulated through my education, community service and work experience to serve people and make a difference in their
