The Odyssey compared with O Brother, Where Art Thou? The Odyssey written by Homer in the early 7th century B.C. is a fascinating story about Odysseus and his struggles to return home, after the long war in Troy. The story of Odysseus inspired the movie, O Brother, Where Art Thou? directed by the Coen brothers. This movie is about Everett Mcgill, a prisoner who escapes with two of his friends to get home to his wife and children. The trio gets into many different situations, resembling some of The Odyssey's issues. While both Everett Mcgill and Odysseus are great leaders, Odysseus is the better one. Everett first helps his friends escape from prison before heading to Pete’s cousin’s house to stay the night. His cousin then reports them to the police for a bounty prize resulting in the police showing up to arrest the men, where Everett shows some of his first signs of a leader. Some of Everett’s good leadership traits are his ability to make split-second decisions to help save his friends. For example, when the trio had to save Tommy, they killed the color guard in order to sneak past the others. Some of Everett’s bad leadership traits are when Everett and Delmar got beat up and robbed by the “Cyclops” man. Another example of this would be when they lost Pete and couldn’t find him until he showed up at the movie theater. Everett would also get greedy at times, like when they helped rob the bank. This would all backfire on him when he got robbed. Everett seemed to be a decent leader, but he also lied to his friends about why they were escaping from jail. He seemed to be selfish at times risking his friends’ lives when they escaped. Overall, Everett was not a good leader when compared to
