There have been many major wars in American history. However the bloodiest war was the Civil War between the Union and the Confederates. The Man who led the Union was a very famous person. So famous, in fact that there have been several books, articles, and poems written about him. He was President Abraham Lincoln, who was considered to be one of the greatest presidents in all of American history. Abraham Lincoln is most famously known for the emancipation Proclamation and the 13th Amendment. This amendment was one of Lincoln 's greatest accomplishments In “Emancipation” written by Russell Freedman and “O Captain! My Captain!” written by Walt Whitman the Authors use Symbolism, Historic References and Characterization to portray Lincoln as a Great leader. In “O Captain! My Captain!” the author expresses Lincoln as a great leader multiple times using symbolism. The poem see’s Lincoln as a captain on a ship because the captain is the most important person on a ship. The whole story it talks about a captain which can lead you to infer that he is the captain. Here is one example “o captain my captain our fearful trip is done.” This can very well lead you to infer Lincoln is the captain. The poem also states that there is a ship in the poem.
