Concert Review On November 25, 2017, the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra performed a concert by the title of: Here's a Riddle You Haven’t Heard at First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge. The conductor was Dan Allcott. The soloists were Garrett McQueen on the bassoon and Karen Kartal on violin. The First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge is a very nice acoustic space for the band. The Symphony first performed “I Crisantemi” by Giacomo Puccini. This piece was written in 1890, during the Romantic Era of music. The piece was written in a single night by Puccini after the Duke of Savoy, Amadeo died. The Symphony did a beautiful job recreating this piece. It was performed by the stringed instruments including the violin I and II, viola, cello, and bass. The piece lasted around 6 minutes. The instruments were in tune and had wonderful tone. They all stayed together and performed this piece very well.
The Symphony performed “Three Pieces in Olden Style” by Henryk Gorecki. Gorecki was Polish. The piece was written in 1963. The piece takes some recent music techniques along with elements of folk music. This piece has three parts. It begins with music that starts calm and slow but then builds intensity. This piece features soloist Garrett McQueen on the bassoon. This piece was composed in 1933. The piece was written for a bassoon and a string orchestra, which is how it was performed in this concert. McQueen did wonderful on the bassoon. He was in tune and played with excellent tone. The rest of the orchestra also did well. They played their parts while not covering up Mr. McQueen and his part. The piece was beautifully put together. The soloist did a wonderful job blending with the orchestra while also sticking out enough to know that he was the center of attention.
