Have you ever been teased about your looks or your personality? If so, did you feel like there is something wrong with yourself? Millions of American that happen to be obese gets discriminated this way day in and day out. Everyday there would be a least one person in America that would make fun of an obese person. The reason why people in America make fun of an obese person is because American society has many myths about obesity. One of the most common myth that American society has on obesity is that these people are lazy and if they wanted to lose weight, they can. Some other myths that society have on obesity are that these people are not healthy, and all obese people are compulsive overeaters. For the most part, these myths are not true. All these myths does is discriminate and create a lack of confidence in an obese person. Obesity is a medical condition in which the body stores a large amount of fat tissue under the skin and around organs and joints (Encarta Encyclopedia). According to the article, “Body Fat and Health: Less is more,” a person is considered to be obese if his or her body mass index (BMI) is 30 or above (5). For the most part, American society discriminates against obese people and this discrimination greatly affect the way that an obese person view themselves. Society look at an obese person and society creates a myth based on what it sees.
