In today’s society, obesity is vastly growing throughout America. Being obese means having excess fat on the body. Who or what determines if someone is obese? Doctors have come up with the system of body mass index; also known as BMI (Obesity Definition 1). This is a system that takes your height and weight into a calculation to determine the amount of fat on your body (Obesity Definition 1). The results are then taken and put you into a category of underweight, healthy weight, overweight, or obese. BMI calculations can range anywhere from below 18.5 to 30 or higher (Obesity in America 1). Research has shown the great increase in obesity in America today. No one really takes the time to read about the calories, sugars, and fats that are added to our food. In today’s society, not many people live on a farm where they can grow and eat their own natural and healthy food. Being organic is too expensive for many people to be eating everyday. Fast food is cheap and easy, that’s why it is attractive to most people. People now of days are living off low wages as everything around us is so expensive. People need to put gas in their car and clothes on their back, so where do they cut back? Food because it can be substituted in cheaper ways like fast food and the sugary items at the grocery store. Staying healthy these days is so hard because organic food is so expensive and it does not contain all the preservatives and hormones and every other unhealthy thing that is seen in almost all food today.
