Over the past two decades technology has advanced exponentially. The internet is now more developed and expansive than it ever was before and television is available to most Americans. The internet was a form of technology which was created to serve just purposes such as bettering communication, making information accessible, and a means to protect our country. Just like the internet, television was created to aid the spread of information but, today the internet and television has become a monstrosity. Almost 81% of adults in America have smartphones, and use them for at least 1 hour and 39 minutes daily. The average American spends about 10 hours in front of a screen daily, and almost 50 hours a week for entertainment and media purposes. …show more content…

Technology may have made life easier but, it hasn’t always made it healthier. Technology has taken over activities people did that unknowingly kept them healthy. This lack of activeness causes obesity. America suffers from obesity more than most other countries. But, obesity isn’t the physical consequence of out dependency on technology. In America the amount of nearsighted people has jumped drastically over the past 30 years. Most of this is the fault of technology. People have increased their TV time by massive amounts, people now watch hours of television daily. Watching television or playing videogames or basically viewing any screen for long amounts of time use a lot of mental power to process what is being viewed, this usually results in headaches and migraines. Throughout my life I have seen and met numerous amounts of people that have health issues because of their excessive use of technology. My father was very interested in computers and games and went on to become a computer engineer but, he was on a computer for 5 hours strait daily. Today my father has glasses and his eyes are much weaker. Another effect is on children. Parents find television and the internet to be a free babysitter. Children often are allowed to abuse technology so their parents can work. This causes children to fall behind in school and in other fields.
