Judy Fong-Bates short story “The Gold Mountain Coat” and Susan Young’s poem “Wordsmith” portray a strained relationship between a father and his children. Both the fathers are distant from their children but while the father in “Wordsmith” makes sincere efforts to bond with his daughter, Sam sing from “The Gold Mountain coat” chooses to remain strict and unapproachable towards his two sons. From the beginning of both the pieces of literature, the main difference of love and approachability is evident. Merriam Webster’s Medical Dictionary defines obesity as: “a condition that is characterized by excessive accumulation and storage of fat in the body and that in an adult is typically indicated by a body mass index of 30 or greater”. Over the past few decades, countries around the world have seen an increase in this condition; the most prevalent of these countries being The United States of America. The class of overweight humans can be attributed to environmental exposures and dietary habits influenced by childhood as well. For instance, if a child has grown up in a home that provides ill nourishment through chemically enhanced foods rather than whole nutrient-enriched foods, the chances of them becoming obese increase exponentially.
Good evening, representatives from the health administration, esteemed doctors and many other health organisations. Today I will be revealing to you the single most pressing matter that has slipped under our radars for far too long. I am of course talking about the sugar beverages that I see being constantly in the hands of everyone I see whether it be in the hall while people are having their break or even crossing the street. It seems despite our combined efforts this health is continuing.
The high obese population can be explained by culture, portion sizes, food companies and restaurant policies, diets, and traditions. Obesity is not only an individual issue; it is most importantly a national matter. It raises both individual and collective problems related to economic and demographic dynamics. Therefore, based on the alarming rate obesity is growing, it is crucial at this point to find a solution in order to slow down and hopefully stop this epidemic. Comparing diets of different countries and taking a look at the background story of American nutrition and regimes, it is clear that the American diet is very different from other nationalities and has worsened over the decades.
