For years women have been affected negatively by the entertainment industry which is evident in old ads and television. Now many years later we still have not made progress in fixing affecting the average woman in a negative way. The entertainment industry has a negative effect on woman of all ages, by giving them images of unrealistic body shapes that are sometimes unachievable. The entertainment industry should not be so prejudice against woman of different shapes, race, and ages, also the media should not portray women as submissive sexual objects. This industry creates eating disorders, an increase in plastic surgeries, and sexual objectification of women.

Sexual objectification is when a body or even body parts are separated from the body and is viewed as object of sexual pleasure rather than a person. Caroline Helman, an associate professor of politics, who specializes in media, gender, and race in the American context, writes in her blog that, “this internalized sexual objectification has been linked to problems with mental health (e.g., clinical depression, “habitual body monitoring”), eating disorders, body shame, self-worth and life satisfaction, cognitive functioning, motor functioning, sexual dysfunction, access to leadership, and political efficacy”, being objectified can lead to many harmful effects. In ads we see close ups of legs, torsos, and lips; this reduces women to just be parts of the body and makes them less than a human. The sexual objectification of woman creates an image of women as being inhuman playthings. Sexual objectification encourages men to be more tolerant of sexual harassment and rape, men see women as sexually available objects and not as a human with feelings or thoughts. The media shows images that support violence against women, images like women being surrounded by men, hands around their throats, or them on the floor.
