Oblivious Empire 'By Dinesh D' Souza And Mark Hertsgaard

America is not the favored country by other countries, as seen in the essays by both Dinesh D’Souza and Mark Hertsgaard. In the article “The Oblivious Empire” by Hertsgaard and the article “America The Beautiful: What We’re Fighting For”, they lay out how America is viewed by other countries and how we interact with them. Both certainly state their opinion very clearly and concisely; they state that something needs to be done about the way we act overseas. Their ideas on how to remedy this situation are vastly different. D’Souza states that we need to heavily enforce our place overseas while Hertsgaard states that we should try to be politer and be careful when dealing and going overseas. Hertsgaard states in his article, “The Oblivious Empire” that most Americans are not well informed about the outside world, and we are also badly informed about what our own government does in other countries in our name. (Hertsgaard 783) We really do not know much about the outside world, we only get glimpses of it when travelling and there are a lot of people who do not even travel overseas. (Hertsgaard 783) He points out that Americans are trying to get all the other countries to become like it, but this is contradictory to the founding reason of America. America was founded to break away from the tyranny of Britain, and what Hertsgaard is saying is that we are now trying to do the same exact thing to the rest of the world. After the 9/11 attack Americans have wondered why Muslims hate them, but Muslims have long wondered the same thing. (Hertsgaard 784) This way of American thinking is hypocritical; since they have been doing the same to Muslims for a long
