Observation At The John Quincy Adams Elementary Classroom

This semester I had the opportunity to observe a group of preschool students. I observed at the John Quincy Adams Elementary School in which is located in the Deer
Park School District. The inhabitants of this district is primarily latinos, african americans. Many of the students that are in this school district are learning english as second language. This means that in their home they speak another language, and its rather difficult for them to learn, and comprehend the information in english. The preschool students were divided into an AM and PM session because it was a rather large group of students. These students came from different backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses. In teaching you shouldn’t individualize instruction based on each student, you should differentiate instruction. What I mean about differentiating instruction is that if you have a classroom from either various backgrounds, students with learning or intellectual disabilities, language impairments, english language learners, or gifted, etc it would be helpful to group students from different skills so each student can learn something different. Nevertheless, while I was observing the teacher would have the students sit in a circle and he would review the lesson that they studied the day before as a group. An example of the types of lessons would be the following; alphabets, the colors of the rainbow, and the article in grammar,etc. Learning as a group helped the students learn differently. The way in which they learned was by helping each other with a different concept such as learning the pattern such as red flower, yellow flower, gold flower and vice versa.Notably, the teacher did in fact use behavioral approaches, those behavioral approaches were the following such as drill and practice, and reinforcement schedules. In terms of reinforcement schedules, the teacher used positive reinforcement, positive punishment, and also negative punishment. In terms of negative punishment if the student did something wrong he took away free time, and toys away. An example of negative punishment is when the student repeatedly is using physical force upon a student, and then the student cries because he has been hurt. Therefore, the teacher will then set the child aside and they won’t be able to play, nor be with their friends for a set period of time.
