Robert Wise’s ‘West Side Story’ is an adaptation of William Shakesapere’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’ that was made for contemporary audiences. Both works dealt with showing how youthful romantic obsession leads to impulsive actions which then causes death. Young people are condemned to impulsivity that comes from youthful romantic obsession which leads to death. This can be seen in Shakespeare’s play Romeo and Juliet. Youthful obsession in ‘Romeo and Juliet’ is exemplified through the characters’ intense infatuation towards each other which can be seen when Juliet utilises a simile to declare her “bounty is as boundless as the sea, / My love as deep'' to underscore her affection towards Romeo. This stresses their impulsive nature as they eagerly rush into marriage, driven by their fervent desire to be united and their inability to resist the passions of their hearts.
