Please think about Obsessive-Compulsive & Related Disorders; There are many different symptoms that help us to accurately diagnose these disorders; after reading about these disorders, how might social workers be able to differentiate this disorder from other disorders? Social worker might be able to differentiate this disorder from other disorder by becoming familiar with the criteria listed in the DSMIV. Social workers have to be familiar with their clients and the DSM in order to make a proper diagnosis. Social worker also have to be aware that sometime client may diagnose themselves with this disorder and become adimit about having this DSM. I have seen several of client sin my practicum as well as many of my family and friends that claim to have this DSM. Many people believe that just because they like order, that they have this DSM and that not always true. People should see a clinical to receive an diagnose instead of diagnosing themselves. How could a social worker avoid misdiagnosing? I think that the likely hood of a person being diagnose with this disorder is very unlikely. Social worker can refer to the DSM to find out the criteria to see if clients meet it or not, the DSM is very strict with this disorder so I don’t think that many social workers would misdiagnose a person. A social worker can avoid a misdiagnoses by understating the criteria and if they don’t thy can ask a peer to do another assessment of the client.
