Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder: A Case on Joe Goldberg This paper talks about the character Joe Goldberg in the show “You” who I diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder. Joe is a 34-year-old Caucasian male that was born into a family that neglected him. He was forced to watch his father abuse his mother which in turn made him loathe his father. Joe would later on shoot and kill his father out of his own anger which would be the start of his symptoms. I will explain that obsessive-compulsive disorder is best explained by the biological model of etiology. Research proves that genetics are a main cause in individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder.
Case History
Joe Goldberg was born into a family that was neglectful. He was an only child of a father who would abuse his mother and he would have to sit there and watch it all happen. (Barlow & Durand, 2015). He would have “recurrent and persistent thoughts” of his victims which would lead to him stalking them. He was obsessed with one person and would follow them and anyone else he thought was a threat. Trying to suppress these thoughts never worked for him but he tried as much as he could because he knew it always led to something unpleasant. Even with these attempts, he could not stop himself. Almost every person that he became involved with he would stalk so this became a repetitive behavior. The reasoning for stalking these individuals was to prevent them from causing any interference with the relationship Joe was in because he was in distress that they were trying to pull his significant other away from him. He had such a desire to be in the perfect relationship that he became obsessed with it. Days and weeks would be spent making sure nothing bad
