The short story, A Worn Path, by Eudora Welty, is about a tale about a difficult journey. The main character, Phoenix Jackson, an elderly African American woman, goes on a long journey on a cold December day to retrieve medicine for her grandson. Phoenix makes this trip biannually, to where she knows the path by heart. Yet, upon this trip she faces many obstacles, and courageously overcomes all of them. The theme of the story, A Worn Path, is that the human heart can survive, despite the forces of nature and society that attempt to destroy it.
