Savannah Blietz Ms.Fordyce English P.2 21 September 2015 Is College worth the struggle? In this society that students live in the only way that they think they know how to tell people’s intelligence is by going to college. By not going to college the students think that they have more of an opportunity to explore the world then other people in college, but some disagree with this opinion and some agree that the source of all opportunity is the person and not their educational level. The educational level for language, math, and science has the student’s country ranked at the bottom because the people in the United States don’t take college seriously, it affects us as a country.
This source supports my argument because it lists the obstacles that primarily Hispanic and African American students struggle with when transitioning from high school to college. The author states that one of the most significant obstacles the students face is the inadequacy in college planning. This source supports my argument, providing information different from the other sources I’ve studied thus far. Conley, Angela. "What Kinds of Obstacles Do Minorities Face in Higher Education?
What is a leader?” John Quincy Adams once declared “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” If I never expressed my story to others. No one would know how much I have achieved in the past 17 years. I grew up in a Haitian-American household, with my mother, and my three younger siblings.
My course and background gave me a substantial disadvantage and I often fell behind. When I graduated high school I decided to give college an initial try but I did not do so well and I had to pause my studies to rethink my course. One of my biggest deterrents was my uncertain future in America.
There are a lot of obstacles students face when trying to college and going to college, sometimes these obstacles involve how counseling and emotional support is out of the question and other reasons are fall into the category of not having too much money to afford school or if they could afford college through scholarships they still struggle with meeting their basic needs. Students lots of minority students face constant oppression because of students face discouragement and this can lead students down two roads, sometimes to regret and misery. Minorities have never really grasp the opportunity of getting a higher education because these students are always discouraged from dreaming of college, making
Most people think it is easy for minorities to succeed but they do not see the struggle but they do not see the struggle one has to go through since they believe it is easy since they are wealthy but they do not see the fact that we aren't. This is critical because they are going to keep treating majorities in a certain way that's not right. It is hard for Blacks and Latinos since they aren't exposed to what it takes to attend great college because the status they are given perceives them as not worthy. Some Students of color get mistreated and some get treated better than others some get great opportunities while others are declined the same opportunities that are given to the ones who get treated better and by that Black and Latino students
Did you know that when most high school students graduate and go to college they still have a lot of Remedial classes? When most students graduate from High school they aren't ready for college. Studies show that students who are emotionally unprepared are usually not the ones who end up with a better life. Why are most students unprepared for college? I think that they're unprepared for college because They are not used to the crazy schedules.
In addition to monetary obstacles, societal obstacles are a part of many college student lives as well. There are many different societies in college which means that there are many different societal obstacles to possibly deal with. There are plenty of obstacles that college students will encounter and they can simply avoid them. These are issues such as smoking or drinking. Students who are around crowds who like to smoke and drink could possibly pressure the college student to do either or even both.
If college is supposed to be the next step in our lives, why is it so difficult to handle? We should be able to concentrate more on our work. This is just another example of us being kept down. If we are going to have enough courage to come to college and attempt to learn, they will punish us with cost and make sure we have to work to stay so we can’t do as well as we should.
Deciding on attending a college or university is one of the best choices in life, though we must know our way to get there. Resources regarding entering college are available everywhere, however the question stands: Where do I begin? First-generation students are the ones to struggle the most. A person who already went through the initial process is one to provide the best first-hand guidance. Alas, first-generation students are the first in their family to pursue a college education, therefore they do not have the same resources.
Obstacles in our lives force us to better ourselves due to the lessons we learn. In April of 2015, I was struck with the realization that I was going to have to learn one of those lessons. I was also struck with a six foot long wooden beam straight to the head. I was soon diagnosed with a concussion. I then became aware that this was not my first or second concussion; this was my eighth concussion.
My biggest barrier to attending college is my parents financial problems, they mostly likely are not going to be able to pay for my whole tuition, but scholarships can help pay my tuition for college. Another barrier of mine would be my lack of speaking english correctly, because my primary language is Spanish and secondary language is English which I learned to speak when I was about ten years olds.
The seven barriers to academic success to be analyzed are close-knit families and communities, separate identities, knowledge of college procedures, pressure to succeed, returning home, the pervasiveness of poverty and the importance of early intervention
I have overcome many obstacles since attending a postsecondary education. Money has always been a problem for my family and I, and going to school was an addition to many of our money problems. However, I knew that I had no other option than to attend college in order to get a degree for my family to live a better life. Not asking my parents for assistance or additional money has been a toll for the amount of debt I’m now accountable for.
Learning is a lifelong process, regardless how it is accomplished; reading, internet surfing, social gatherings where one acquires new skills or knowledge. As a society we are conditioned to put limitations upon ourselves and education is one of those limitations. One’s beliefs, regarding education, are many, especially when it involves adults returning back to school. Certain barriers such as; integrating school life into one’s everyday life, fear of technology and fear of classroom integration just to name a few. Trying to find time to go attend class and study can sometimes be a full time job, let alone integrating it into one’s everyday life.
