Occupational therapy (OT) is a form of treatment for people recuperating from a physical or mental illness. It helps increase their quality of life by helping them return to or gain independence after an life-changing injury or diagnosis. Occupational therapy professionals help patients achieve rehabilitation through learning or relearning ways to complete required daily activities. Here at South University, the Occupational Therapy Assistant(OTA) program is a two-year Associate’s program for certification as an Occupational Therapy Assistant. Many people can benefit from an Occupational Therapist and their patients come from a wide variety of injured individuals and diagnoses. This was of interest to me; it did not occur to me that there would be any way for an Occupational Therapist to work with infants. Occupational therapists work with people at every stage of life.
The criminal justice and law enforcement fields probably have plenty of interactions with occupational therapy patients before they become patients, such as people in serious traffic accidents, drug addicts, mentally ill individuals, homeless, or victims of violent crime. The best way to help potential patients of occupational therapy is to try and limit their unnecessary interactions with the criminal justice system in the first place.
For those injured by or the victims of violent crime or accidents this can be achieved through finding justice for the victims and their families. This would allow them the ability to better focus on healing and successfully completing their
