Since we are children, we dream that we will be when we grow up. In my case in particular was changing over the years, first I wanted to be a general doctor, neonatologist or psychologist, always wanting to know the field of health. With the passing of the years when it came time to choose who wanted to study, after extensive research on professions, I decided to choose occupational therapy assistant.
One of the most motivated aspects of occupational therapy is the way in which our work helps people who are born or have suffered some form of physical disability. One of the main causes of disability is caused by stroke. Stroke is the third leading cause of death and the major cause of long-term disability among older adults in the United States. My stepfather's mother was a stroke victim.
After several days in the hospital and some tests, began to be remarkable the sequels that had left in her the stroke. Such as language problems and loss of motor skills also affecting the ability to walk alone. It was necessary to resort to professional help in order to offer her the right help and create an environment that could facilitate her activities given her condition. The first therapies were in the hospital and then they were done in the house.
In the rehabilitation process after a stroke, the work of the occupational therapist and the occupational therapy assistant is of paramount importance in order to integrate the patients to the Activity of Daily Livings, such as: feeding, dressing, bathing, toileting, hygiene.
