Over the course of the past few decades, Occupational Therapy and Mental Health have established a meaningful relationship. The history of the profession started with the Moral Treatment Movement and the need to support the mental health population. There is an even balance between occupational therapist’s providing services to the mental health community and the push towards participation in everyday occupations. In addition, occupational therapy promotes quality of life in the mental health community and enhances social care through everyday interactions. As a result, the client will be enabled to adjust and master their environment. It is important to allow the client to feel in control of their situation and explore occupational participation in one’s context. The ultimate goal for applying and utilizing this model is to promote the client’s autonomy, independence, and enhance overall interactions in everyday activities. The models are focused on the person, environment, and occupation. According to Wong & Fisher (2015),“Occupational therapy theorists and model builders combine the knowledge from these multiple fields into cohesive models that address the needs of occupational therapy recipients and practitioners (p.301). In my personal opinion, occupational therapy plays a important role in mental health community. The models and theories are set in place to guide our intervention plan and process. The mental health community requires a collaborative approach, consisting of integrating various occupational based models and assessment. In addition, therapeutic intervention is an integral part of mental health rehabilitation. After comparing and contrasting the model of human occupation and the person occupation environment model, together the models are evidence based and research indicates that models are equally
