I have always wanted to work in healthcare as I feel it is important to help others and provide a service that can have a significant impact on someone’s life. Occupational Therapy provides me the opportunity to have an impact on people’s lives because of the way that they can work with their clients. Unlike most professions in the healthcare field, OTs work together with the client rather than strictly telling them what to do during their treatment. This is important as it helps build a connection between the OT and the client and helps the client feel more empowered in the treatment process. He lives in Alabama and did not get diagnosed until very late or receive proper services to help with his development. Growing up and visiting him showed me the importance of receiving services. Seeing this firsthand will aid me in one of my long-term professional goals of working with children who have these developmental delays. Another professional goal would be to work with those in the military or veterans. Both my parents are veterans and stressed the importance that serving in the military has on them as well as the experiences that you gain. During my time in the program, I completed over 50 credits in OT classes and participated in level 1 fieldwork. Outside of the OT classes I also prioritized classes such as abnormal psychology and development classes to gain a further understanding and preparation for a career as an OT. My dismissal resulted from getting a C in a 6-credit OT Process in Children/Youth class and having my cumulative GPA drop below the 3.0 requirement. My GPA was greatly affected by a D that I received during the first semester of my freshman year in a precalculus class. At the time, I did not know that I could withdraw from classes and would have taken the opportunity to do so if I had known. This grade immediately put me below the 3.0 GPA requirement however, my GPA raised incrementally every single semester, with no decline in any semester, from my freshman year until the Children/Youth class mentioned above. My transcript does not show, regarding the C in the OT Process in Children/Youth, that I was only .3 points away from earning a C+ in the class. Because the class was six credits, had I earned the .3 points I would have met both the grade requirement and kept my cumulative GPA above the 3.0 requirement. Despite these setbacks, I have only continued to improve as a student most recently getting an A in all the classes that
