I enjoyed watching the film “As Good As It Gets” and seeing Jack Nicholson portray the character Melvin, who is diagnosed with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Melvin’s anxiety level is heightened, as a result of his OCD. Things that tend to increase his anxiety include having a dog or people in his apartment, sitting at another table with another waitress at his favorite restaurant, using the utensils provided by a restaurant, and stepping on cracks in sidewalks. Throughout the film, Melvin goes to great extremes to avoid his fears. A scene that stood out to me in the movie, as showing the true intensity of Melvin’s disorder, was when he went to the restaurant, where he dined regularly, and saw that another couple was sitting at the table where he usually sits. When he was offered another table by the restaurant staff, he refused it, stating that he wanted his table with his waitress. He works from home as a writer and the majority of his interactions with people involve him insulting them through racist, homophobic, or other disrespectful comments. As the story progresses, we start to better understand Melvin's disorder, which helps us see him in a different light. We see a friendship begin with his neighbor, Simon, whom he previously did not get along with, due to Simon’s sexuality. We also see a relationship begin with his favorite waitress, Carol. Melvin initially helps Carol by paying for her son’s medical treatments, just so she can come back to work and wait on him. Carol and Melvin's relationship is complex throughout the film, but at the end when Melvin is upfront about his feelings for her, it is suggested that they will start a romantic
