Epic Hero or Epic Zero Would one think of Odysseus as an epic hero? Although he had excessive pride and cheated on his wife, he has many traits that makes him an epic hero. For example, Odysseus was able to come up with a genius plan to injure Polyphemos before he could eat any more of Odysseus’ men, that demonstrates the trait of intelligence. Odysseus has been through many hardships and has always used his traits to help him get through any obstacle. Throughout Odysseus’ journey home, he demonstrates leadership, intelligence, and superhuman strength.
In part one of Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus uses his epic hero qualities to help him out on his quest to get back home to Ithaca. He’s shows superb intelligence when fighting the cyclopes in “Book 9.” That’s a quality of superhuman intelligence that Odysseus possessed all throughout his entire journey. Another epic hero quality that helped Odysseus was help from Greek gods and goddesses. In part two of Homer’s Odyssey, Athena helped out Odysseus when he got back to his home land.
When he was in the land of the Cyclops, he knew they couldn’t just instantly kill Polyphemus. First, Odysseus told him that his name was “Nohbdy”. This would turn out to be a very clever idea. He made an idea to make a spear out of an olive tree and burn the tip to blind the Cyclops at a later time. This way they would be able to escape tied underneath the sheep when it moved the giant rock over.
In the epic poem, “The Odyssey” by Homer, the protagonist, Odysseus, is an epic hero. The definition of an epic hero is a “Larger-than-life figure that undertakes great journeys and performs deeds requiring remarkable strength and cunning. An epic hero is put into situations that test their skills and bravery, along with their character. Also, a hero in an epic is vastly portrayed with good leadership qualities and a strong work ethic. However, does Odysseus really fit into this criteria?
Odysseus is an epic hero in The Odyssey and goes through many trials throughout his adventure. The hero faces many monsters, creatures, and mythological beings on his journey back to Ithaca. Brave Odysseus shows many traits of being a normal man on a mission, but also shows traits of an epic hero. Odysseus sends three of his best men to check out this island, but bad luck has them and they run into Lotus Eaters who are addicted to the Lotus Plant. The next they know is the three men become addicted also.
Instead of rejoicing in their escape from Polyphemus, Odysseus boasted; “Cyclops! If any mortal asks you how your eye was mutilated and made blind, say that Odysseus, the city sacker, Laertes son, who lives in Ithaca, destroyed your sight. ”(Butler 500, Book IX) Boasting to the Cyclops shows his arrogance as he and his crew are far from safe. Odysseus' failure to trust his men with simple knowledge displays reckless leadership.
