A hero is someone who reaches out to others and helps them in times of need. They put others, well being before their own and and show integrity and sincerity. Odysseus conquered Trojan using a wooden horse which was meant to be seen as a gift. when he returned home Poseidon was angry because he killed his son. It took them 10 years to get back home. He returns to Ithaca to his wife Penelope and she creates a contest in which the suitors have to string Odysseus' bow and shoot an arrow through 12 ax heads. Penelope then realizes it is Odysseus and the story has a happy ending. In Homer's Epic Poem the Odyssey Odysseus does not display the traits of being a true hero. He is selfish, untrustworthy, and arrogant.

A hero is a trustworthy person and In the Odyssey Odysseus portrays himself as being Untrustworthy. True Heroes are honest even if being untruthful can create a positive outcome from a negative situation. “My name is Nohbdy: mother, father, and friends,/ everyone calls me Nohbdy.” ( 274-275 ) . Another instance where Odysseus shows his untrustworthiness is when he says to the Cyclops “Cyclops, try some wine./ Here ‘s liquor to wash down your scraps of men./ Taste it, and see the kind of drink we carried/ under our planks. I meant it for an offering/ if you would help us home.” ( 256-259 ) . In this quote you see Odysseus lying for his personal benefit and being malicious. Heroes should always be honest and face their challenges straightforwardly not like a coward. Only a coward has to lie to face his problems.
