At the start of the storybook, Odysseus is a hubristic and egotistical character. For example, when Circe advises him to place wax inside his ears while hearing the sirens sing. Instead of listening to this advice, Odysseus tells his crew to cover their ears in wax, and he instructs them to tie him up rather than just placing wax inside his ears. He makes this choice because he believes he can withstand the sirens' singing.
A hero is someone who is revered for his or her exceptional achievements and bravery. Anyone who puts themselves before others not for recognition or an award, but because it is the right thing to do, is a true hero. In "The Odyssey," written by Homer is an epic poem about a man named Odysseus and his crewmates competing against the power of the gods to return to their homeland, Ithaca. The Odyssey, one of the oldest texts known to mankind, has made a permanent mark in the heart of Greek art and literature forever. The Odyssey is known as the story of a long forgotten king, Odysseus, exploring the seas, going on his long quest to make his way back to his homeland. One grand encounter Odysseus faces are the mythical creatures known as the sirens. The sirens are notorious for the beautiful song they sing, but this song leaves a deceiving effect on anyone who hears the words, and anyone who’s heard the song has either been killed or does not remember. The only way Odysseus could return home is if he sailed passed the sirens.

According to Joseph Campbell a hero's journey is defined as: ""a pattern of narrative (...) that appears in drama, storytelling, myth, religious ritual, and psychological development. I feel like his different fazes helped guide him to a different person and gave him a new sense of chracte. In book 1 when Odysssues and his men went off to fight the trojans odysseus was staying on task but as he defeated the trojans he became some what selfish. After Odysseus victory Odysseus feels that he has power, he feels as if he is undestrutable and he wants more.

Odysseus was told to have his men tie him up and for him to listen to the Sirens (Homer 882). The Sirens are very dangerous because it is under water singing that lures you to the beautiful sounds. The sounds are irresistible and once you start heading towards the sound you cannot stop and go back to your ship. You eventually drown because you never go back up for air and the Sirens never quit singing.
