Odysseus the Brave Hero In Homer's “The Odyssey”, the protagonist, Odysseus is fighting in the 10 year war against Troy. They win the war and now he and his men are trying to get back to their home, Ithaca. He angers the god of the sea, Poseidon, and now he has a god as an enemy. Poseidon sends waves after waves blowing him and his crew to islands, each having a conflict like monsters and goddesses.
A hero is someone who is more intelligent than others, skilled at fighting, and confident. These traits help them defeat monsters by using clever plans, fighting skills, and the belief that they will succeed. For example, someone who fits these standards is Odysseus. He uses his intelligence to navigate possible problems and create plans. His fighting skills help him eliminate monsters or “bad guys''.
Oddysey hero and anti-hero essay What even is a hero? What qualities do they even have that is so important in the daily life? I ask myself the same question. well, written by the one and only Homer. The Odyssey is an epic poem believed to be published in 800 bce.
Nixon Waterman once remarked, “Say ‘I will!’ and then stick to it- That’s the only way to do it”. This quote inspires people like these two characters to be determined and work for the goal they want to achieve. Using this they both go through successful journeys and fight through their enemies.
Odysseus, what comes to mind when you hear that name? I think courage, and bravery. Odysseus states in the book ,“A man who has been through bitter experiences and travelled far enjoys even his sufferings after a time” .This quotes fits really well with him because he went through alot and even when he was in those hard times they are good memerios now. Odyessus has many hardships and struggles on different islands throughout this story like ,The Island of cyclops,Circe´s Island, and The land of the sirens. ¨You´re a ninny ,or else you come from the other end of nowhere telling me,mind the gods!We cyclops care not a whislte for your thundering Zues or all the gods in bliss; we have more force by far¨….(page
In the story The Odyssey, the main character, Odysseus, like everyone else, shows both good and bad qualities within his personality. Throughout his adventures, Odysseus has shown courage, curiosity, and willpower, as cited in the following passages. Odysseus repeatedly demonstrates courage throughout the story, like when he confronts the witch Circe and her hound of hungry animals. For example, this quote: “In the wild wood they found an open glade, around a smooth stone house—the hall of Circe—and wolves and mountain lions lay there, mild in their soft spell, fed on their drug of evil. None would attack (Homer, 911).”
Odysseus should be considered unheroic because he refused to listen to anyone's suggestions and kept putting his men in dangerous situations. For example, Odysseus’ men told him to take the cheese and lambs and leave but Odysseus told them,”Ah, how sound was that! Yet I refuse, I wished to see the caveman, what he had offer- no pretty sight, it turned out, for my friends” (Homer 5). This demonstrates unheroic behavior because they didn't know whether or not the cyclops would be nice but instead of putting safety first, Odysseus insisted on meeting the cyclops. He let his curiosity take over and stopped caring about what would happen to them.
Literary Heros For The Ages A Hero. As Maya Angelou said, “I think a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place for everyone”A hero like Percy Jackson, and Odysseus is a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. Two major literary characters have earned this title, Odysseus from The Odyssey by Homer and Percy Jackson from the Percy Jackson Series written by Rick Riordan. One can argue that Odysseus is the better hero compared to Percy Jackson, but it should also be said that Percy “The Prodigy” Jackson is more deserving of the title “Hero”. Although many people believe that Odysseus in this generation is a hero because he valiant, strong and smart, one could also argue that he does everything for himself.
If Odysseus where to be using modern day standards by being a hero. He would be more of saving things than to harm them. Odysseus is a old hero and if he were to be in the new days. His actions would have put him in prison or in jail. Odysseus is a Greek hero that traveled and fought many challenges for over twenty years.
Odysseus is not a hero because he stabs Polyphemus in the eye and blinds him. Odysseus is still a hero because he is a leader. Moreover, after Odysseus and his men fight the Cicones, he orders ¨Back and Quickly! Out to sea again!” (Homer 984).
With both of those qualities in his arsenal, he led his army in the trials bestowed upon him. In the end, being a hero means taking the right actions at the right times. This idea is elucidated by the quote, “Heroes are heroes because they are heroic
Some think Odysseus is a hero for many reasons, mainly because he helps many people including his family and his crew. Even when terrible things happen to him and his crew he perseveres and continues on his journey home. Even though Odysseus and his men do bad things like eating the sun god’s cattle there still are many reasons why he is a hero. One reason to support my claim is that he saves his crew many times. One example is when they sailed by the Sirens.
You must be made all of iron" (279-80). While Odysseus is a strong man and a hard worker, it is always better to be on his good side, as he can be very temperamental( third source). We see that he has a temper multiple times throughout his journey, but the most prominent time, perhaps, is when he has the suitors killed when he returns to Ithaca. In conclusion, Odysseus is a hero because of his many great qualities.
Throughout the story, Odysseus demonstrates his courage that ultimately allows him to survive. One of these moments was during his journey back to Ithaca, where he faces a race of man eating giants called the Cyclops. Odysseus originally stops his ship there to relish a feast while on his journey back to Ithaca, but while doing so, out of curiosity explores the island. Soon, he finds a deserted house and decides to wait of the owner. The owner was unknowingly one the Cyclops, named Polyphemus.
