Homer’s The Odyssey, translated by Robert Fitzgerald, contains a man named Odysseus whose story can relate to soldiers in today’s military, and how Odysseus has to persevere to get home. Odysseus is a loving husband who goes to fight in the Trojan War. His son, Telemachus, is born shortly before Odysseus has to leave for the war. The Trojan War is a long fight that lasts ten years.
In part one of Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus uses his epic hero qualities to help him out on his quest to get back home to Ithaca. He’s shows superb intelligence when fighting the cyclopes in “Book 9.” That’s a quality of superhuman intelligence that Odysseus possessed all throughout his entire journey. Another epic hero quality that helped Odysseus was help from Greek gods and goddesses. In part two of Homer’s Odyssey, Athena helped out Odysseus when he got back to his home land.
Epic poetry, known for its grand descriptions of glorious accomplishments, revolves around an honorable protagonist. As the hero faces adversity in his journey, he triumphs in fleeting moments of bravery. He often exhibits his physical strength to overcome his hardships, manifesting a story with a violent nature. In Homer’s The Odyssey, King Odysseus of Ithaca struggles to return to his loving wife and son after having fought in the Trojan War.
A hero is someone who is revered for his or her exceptional achievements and bravery. Anyone who puts themselves before others not for recognition or an award, but because it is the right thing to do, is a true hero. In "The Odyssey," written by Homer is an epic poem about a man named Odysseus and his crewmates competing against the power of the gods to return to their homeland, Ithaca. Throughout his journey, he loses almost all of his men, but Odysseus finally arrives home, concluding his prolonged twenty-year voyage. Odysseus must battle the suitors that have taken his wife Penelope, and may soon kill his son Telemachus.
Odysseus did the right thing he took back what was his. I think that when they took it over they should have had a better plan. They should have taken it when they were trying to get Odysseus girlfriend. Odysseus new that they were going to take it over. When you take over a house you should have men at the front door watching for people.
When you think of heroes, Superman, Batman, and WonderWoman come to mind. When you think about war heroes, a different picture comes to mind: successful battles, weapons, glory. Homer’s character Odysseus may not fly, but he is considered both. In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus gradually develops from a boastful war hero into an epic hero through the stages of the Challenges, the Transformation, and the Atonement.
Odysseus an Epic hero Odysseus is the son of the King of Ithaca Laertes. As he grew up he was taught combat skills. When Odysseus was old enough to take over his father Laertes let him rule Ithaca. Laertes passed away later after Odysseus became king of Ithaca. As he ruled Ithaca Odysseus began to think about marriage.
In the book the Odyssey, it mainly talks about Odysseus’ journey home. His journey was very dangerous and involved many threats to Odysseus’ life. He encountered many supernatural being such as gods and goddesses and traveled to many different places including the underworld. Even though, Odysseus killed many people on his journey, Odysseus is a hero because he defeated all of his enemies, overcame many obstacles, and survived a dangerous, twenty-year journey. To begin, Odysseus is a hero because he conquered all of his enemies.
In Homer’s The Odyssey, Odysseus encounters numerous challenges and trials on his journey home after the Trojan War. One of his memorable challenges was his encounter with Polyphemus, a Cyclops, which showcases Odysseus’ intelligence and leadership qualities while highlighting his arrogance. Odysseus and his men become trapped in the cave of Polyphemus after unknowingly taking shelter and consuming his food. The Cyclops was angered by this and devoured some of his men.
Odysseus is an epic hero, who has good and bad qualities, that’s what makes him human. Odysseus is also a good example of an archetype for epic poems. Odysseus is an epic hero because the epic is about him and he has most of the epic traits. For example: “What shall I say first? What shall I keep until the end?
The Odyssey just focused on the people that effected Odysseus’s personal life, while in The Aenid there are many political influences. Aeneas travels to the many sections of The Underworld, and sees many assortments of people. He visits the swamp of suicides, unborn children, the heroes, the mourning fields, and the place for those awaiting reincarnation. The reoccurring theme of Roman superiority is even evident in hell when Aeneas is shown the souls that are going to be reincarnated, and go on to be glorious, powerful roman men. Aeneas also gets shown the future from a prophet.
I honestly think ''Odysseus'' was smart in a lot of ways. I mean he knew that maybe some of his choices he made seemed dumb at first but the outcome made it seem like some of his choices is smart after all. I personally think that he is justified in this actions. In the story most if not all of the punishments happened in return of something for example ''Odysseus'' left without anyone knowing and also took his men along with him later on they got attacked. As you see if ''Odysseus'' would've left how could and would that had happen.
Aeneas is only an instrument of these themes. The themes are the stars in this story, while Aeneas only accompanied it. Odysseus has its own purpose, its own destiny, while Aeneas is an instrument of fate and thus determines the future of a whole nation. Since the Aeneid a story about the foundation of Rome and the rise of the Roman people this seems logical. This difference is reflected in the reason why the heroes descend to the underworld and the message they received there.
In conclusion, the two men have very profound similarities and differences. Aeneas and Odysseus are both on a similar journey, one to get home, and one to find a place to make home. The two men have different characters; duty-driven and self-interest-driven. Virgil writes The Aeneid the way he does in order to express is opinion that the Roman culture is a better, more victorious culture than the Greek culture. Although, Poseidon has cursed Odysseus, he has other gods on side who are able to help him. Odysseus will go on another quest to appease Poseidon and will return safely and live a good life Oedipus is cursed by Apollo and receives no help from any other gods.
