In The Odyssey, by Homer, tells a story about the many adventures of Odysseus. Many of his adventures are spectacular in many ways; which includes the way they are told, what he does, how he accomplishes it, and how everything magically always seems like it works out for the best (almost all the time). In Homers, The Odyssey, there can be many lessons learned not only for the ancient Greeks, but many can be applied today in everyday life. In the passage, “Scylla and Charybdis”, Odysseus and his men were sailing on a boat and there was a storm that was going come through, so the waves were very intense and the winds picked up speeds. The sirens are very pretty women that lure sailors to their destruction by singing beautiful songs. Before Odysseus begins his journey, he gets told by Circe that this task would be very difficult for him and his crew. As they sail into the water Odysseus ask his crew if they would tie him up to the pole in the middle of the ship and don’t let him get out away, so the crew does what he asks and tell his men to put wax in their ears so they can’t hear the Sirens. Therefore, Odysseus’s crew successfully blocked the sirens singing out, so they kept on sailing on to their next journey. The lesson in this short passage would be…Don’t give into peer pressure. You can apply this in many things throughout your whole life from when you are a child all the way until you’re an adult. Some ways that this lesson could be useful would be if you play on a baseball/softball team and you’re up to bat, last inning, winning run on second, and the other team is trying to get inside your head you have to relax and just do what you know how to do and don’t let the other team get to you. Or you and your friends are at a party and your friends are doing things and they want you to come try it, you don’t have to do it if you don’t want to, don’t let them pressure you into it just because they are doing it.
