Being disrespectful is the worst thing you can do in Greece. Everywhere in the world disrespecting someone is not a nice thing to do. Odysseus never disrespected anyone, like when he said “give me a rag for cover, just some cloths” (bk5, Pg162). He respected the girls and wanted to cover after he got to the island without cloths. There were all girls except Odysseus
In Homer’s The Odyssey, the deaths of Odysseus’ men should not be blamed on Odysseus. “The men open the bag, thinking it contains gold and silver, The bad winds escape and blow the ships back to Aeolus’ island.” The men blow them back to the island when they were almost home. They would have made it if Odysseus’ men weren’t greedy and tried to steal from Odysseus.
Penelope, his wife, is greatly affected; as many greedy suitors disrespect her and move into their home to try and win her hand in marriage. Throughout ‘The Odyssey’, the greed and folly of men play a huge part in increasing the difficulty and severity of Odysseus’s situations and ultimately change his fate and the directions of his journey. The greed and folly of men are largely represented by Penelope’s suitors. In the very first book of The Odyssey, the disgusting actions of the suitors were introduced to the readers.
None of Odysseus’s men were really loyal to him because of their lack of obedience and honesty. In this episode the men learn that their disobedience causes them their lives when Helios the sun god realizes his scared cattle had been killed. Helios furious goes to Zeus and begs him to punish Odysseus’s men, or he will take the sun and go “down to the House of Death and blaze the sun among the dead” (Odyssey 12. 412). Zeus with no choice left but to punish Odysseus’s men whips up a storm and strikes his thunder bolt to destroy Odysseus’s ship soon after they leave the island. No one survives but Odysseus.
In myhtology such as Homer’s “The Odyssey” Odysseus’s actions prove him to be a heel throughout his journey, with his actions to frequently causing problems . During the encounter with the POlyphemus, Odysseus’s choice to meet the cylops caused the rest of the voyage to be cursed and for six of his men to be killed just because of his curiosity. When Odysseus decided to stay with the enchantress Circe he delayed returning home for a year because he enjoyed being pampered.
Odysseus, a man who was known for his adventures, but do we really understand the attributes needed for an epic hero? The King of Ithaca had a very concealed past where it is hardly ever noted that his men were mistreated by their captain and all of Odysseus’ mistakes affected those around him. Odysseus, on several occasions did his men wrong and along his journeys, he became very willful and big headed. In The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus has several misfortunes such as losing all of his men and being stranded and not returning home for 20 years, but evidently all of these problems were caused by the mens lack of trust in Odysseus and Odysseus being too stubborn and full of pride. What if you had gods controlling your fate? That was the case in Odysseus journey back to Ithaca. Greek gods and goddesses played a huge role in Odysseus’ trip home to Ithaca. Some of the gods hated Odysseus, some wanted to help him, and then some just wanted something to play with. One god that hated Odysseus and had a huge part in his delayed journey home was Poseidon.
At the end of part 2 of the Odyssey, when Odysseus is finally home and confronts the suitors in his home, he decides to slaughter them all for invading his home and courting his wife: “Not for the whole treasures of your fathers, all you enjoy, lands, flocks, or any gold put up by others will I hold my hand. There will be killing till the price is paid” (22.62-64). This quote from Odysseus shows that he was furious at the suitors, and he would allow no other atonement for their crimes except death. While the suitors all did wrong things, their actions did not deserve the death penalty. This shows that Odysseus was not thinking straight and being fair, and this is not something a hero would do.

While Odysseus’ actions taken to punish the suitors may appear immoral in modern society, by considering the ways in which modern society differs from Homeric society, Odysseus’ actions are just in the context of the poem. As violence has an extremely negative connotation in modern society, the use of the death penalty is morally ambiguous, and is a highly debated topic; however, violence is far more legitimized in the society of the Odyssey, and therefore, death is a far more acceptable form of punishment. This idea is exemplified by the way in which violence is discussed between characters within the Odyssey. In particular, this general acceptance of violence is demonstrated through the fact that many of the characters within the Odyssey share an almost unanimous belief that the suitors should be put to death to pay for their crimes.
The man of twists and turns is a fitting name for Odysseus, due to how he reacts and acts in situations. Odysseus has his intelligence to thank for all the problems he has found himself in The Odyssey by Homer. Throughout kingdoms and the heavens, Odysseus has a reputation of being sly. Instead of always pulling out his sword whenever he gets the chance, he thinks of a strategy and gets help from others, and does not always depend on his strength to get him out of sticky situations. He uses his cleverness to help him to escape Cyclops’s, gods’, and even other mortal’s wraths.
In this essay I will be talking about how temptation affects Odysseus and the rest of the characters in the story. I will be talking about how Odysseus is personally affected by the temptation. I will be talking about what Odysseus does to keep himself from falling for his desires. I will also be talking about how Odysseus helps himself in the end. Odysseus is a moral man.
More than that, he will have great fame in his homeland if he returns more than anywhere because he was a king of his country and people there know him, love and respect him after he went to the Trojan’s war, he had fame throughout the Greece as a man from Ithaca and if he returns his land even facing those struggles, his people from Ithaca will treat him like a god and sing the song for generation to generations. When he was sharing his story with Swinehard, he told him, “Over the years, you know, a man finds solace even in old sorrows, true, a man who’s weathered many blows and wandered many miles. My own story? This will answer all your questions. .
Odysseus’ slaughter of the suitors was an act of justice and revenge. The act was revenge because slaughtering 108 men for courting your wife and eating your food is insane. If someone did that present-day, society would frown upon the person who committed such an act. It would be considered mass-homicide and the person would be jailed for life. On the other hand, the act is a form of justice because of the setting of the story.
However, they were tempted and killed the cow anyway. His crew's actions hurt Odysseus’s journey. Finally, a temptation described in The Odyssey was the proposed killing of Telemachus. When Antonius proposed ambushing him at sea, Amphinomus resisted the temptation and convinced others to do the same. Amphinomus was rewarded for this later in the book, when beggar Odysseus warned him of the impending slaughter.
