Odysseus Strengths And Weaknesses

Have you ever been away from home for a long time and have been trying to get home? Odysseus has just started to come home from a long 10 year Trojan war. He is trying to get home to his kingdom ithaca with his family. He faces many challenges on his way home. In Homer’s epic poem “Odyssey,” Odysseus’ are strengths and weaknesses magnified during the course of his journey.

Odysseus has many strengths that are highlighted in the Odyssey.The first example of his strength is that he is a very good planner. When he comes home from a 20 year journey he discusses himself as a beggar so no one knows it's him. He finds out that his wife had suitors in the house. So he has his men put beeswax in their ears, and he ties himself to a pole so that he can't do anything if their song gets to him. The last time he plans ahead is when they are stuck in a cave with a massive cyclops and he tells him that his name is nobody. So when Odysseus makes him blind by spearing his eye he tells everyone that nobody did it to him. The second example of his strength is that he is a Good leader. When all of his men thought that they were all going to die he tried motivating them by saying, “Friends, have we never been in danger before this? More fearsome, is it now, than when Cyclops penned us in his cave? Did I not keep my nerve, and use my wits to find a way out for us?” . The first example of his weakness is that he has a huge ego. Him and his crew had just escaped from a huge cyclops that was very mad at them from making him blind. They could have been gone and safe if Odysseus didn't let his ego get in the way by saying his name, his home, and taunting the cyclops. This angered the cyclops and caused him to throw boulders at the boat, which all missed but now the cyclops knew his name. He had called out and asked his father; Poseidon, to curse Odysseus and not let him and his crew back home. The second example of his weakness is that he is very curious. Before they even mate the cyclops it was his curiosity that had them in his cave. They found a little town with food and supplies but he wanted to see a cyclops and it got some of his men killed. Also he's very curious when they were sailing past the sirens he wanted to put himself in danger just to hear what they sounded like. He could have been very hurt just because he wanted to hear a song. The third example of his weakness is that he is not vigilant. In one of the first stories they end up on the island of the lotus. He ends up losing some of his men because he isnt fully watching them and they run off. Also when he is in the land of the dead he finds one of his crew men dead.
