Greek mythology inspires and helps create new pieces of literature. The bag of wind in Stephen Hillenburg’s movie, The Spongebob Squarepants Movie is inspired by Aeolus’ bag of winds that is given to Odysseus. In Homer’s The Odyssey, the gods cause Odysseus' journey home to Ithaca to last longer. Circe, Zeus, and Calypso cause Odysseus to have more pain than he should have had on his journey home. Each one of these gods all have a part in causing Odysseus harm and elongating his journey. When Zeus attacks and kills all of his men, Odysseus floats past Scylla and Charybdis. None of the monsters attack him while floating through. After those terrible events, he lands on Calypso’s island. Calypso sees Odysseus and keeps him on the island. He stays on Calypso’s island for seven years, she seduces him and wants to keep him. Hermes comes to tell Calypso to let him go. Calypso explains to Hermes, “And I welcomed him warmly, cherished him, even vowed to make the man immortal, ageless, all of his days” (5.150-151). She thinks that she saved Odysseus from his death. Calypso is in love with Odysseus and wants to keep him there forever, even though he wants to leave the island. She tries to convince Odysseus by stating, “But if you only knew, deep down, what pains are fated to fill your cup before you reach that shore, you’d stay here, preside in our house with me and be immortal” (5.228-231). Calypso persuades him by saying that he should stay on the island and be immortal. Calypso eventually lets Odysseus go home, but he has to build his own boat. He stays on the island more than he has to. He narrates about how long it took him, “That was the fourth day and all of his work was done” (5.288). Brave Odysseus, strong and heroic, had to go through several gods to travel to Ithaca. On Odysseus' journey home to Ithaca, the gods cause his journey to last longer. He is impacted through divine intervention. The gods attack and kidnap him and his crew. Odysseus deserves to be home in Ithaca after such a long journey. He was the only survivor and he did everything he was told to do. Divine intervention still impacts Odysseus’ life after his journey home. He would die at an old age because he followed all of the steps to get home. He would be remembered as a great hero who lost a lot and earned nothing, but a long eventful
