Away from home for 10 years and A Six hundred mile journey are two unpredictable things. Being that Homer captured the rough journey Odysseus was on and Kira Salak noted all experiences gave insight of how hard these two things are. Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey and Kira Salak’s travel memoir The cruelest Journey, Odyssey and Kira both set off for their individual journey. In Homer’s writing, the main character Odysseus encounters barriers that delay his return back home. Kira Salak goes through a painful journey in Timbuktu determined to finish despite obstacles that appear impossible. Salak figured she could gain a lot while going on this journey since it wasn't accomplished by many before she took the chance of going on the rough journey to Timbuktu. Getting home is Odysseus main goal throughout the epic and arriving home will show all the doubters that Odysseus never stopped thinking about his kingdom.
