he hero’s journey was essential for Odysseus. Throughout the beginning of the story Odysseus had one major flaw, it was his arrogance. Odysseus’ pretentiousness consequently brought more misfortune to him and his crew. Odysseus went through all the parts of the hero’s journey, for example towards the end of the story Odysseus realized that he was not as powerful as he thought. Once odysseus realizes this he starts to worship the gods more.
Penelope hints that she knows that Odysseus is present when he responds to her dream of the death of the geese. Penelope’s knowledge of Odysseus’ presence greatly affects the understanding of her character is she seems very crafty and strategic and an integral role in the slaughter of the suitors. Penelope’s response to Odysseus’ proclamation of the dream predicting Odysseus revenge is a dead giveaway to her knowledge of Odysseus being the beggar. This is seen as she tells him in a wary way that the dream may not be true but if it was true then it would be welcome. This shows her knowledge because it seems that she is warily hinting to Odysseus that she would want him to kill the suitors.
The Odyssey is often cited as an epitome of the hero’s journey and the monomyth. The hero of the story, Odysseus is on a 10 year battle homeward from the Trojan War to see his wife and son again. With the help divine intervention, Odysseus is able to return home and save his wife from the evil suitors who have continuously tried to win her. One could easily argued that Odysseus is an exemplar of the hero, but there is another story: Odysseus is the opposite of a hero and is not worthy to be called such. He is the villain where the gods are the hero.
In the book The Odyssey, men are expected to be strong, physically and mentally, and take positions of leadership. Although this is true sometimes, it is not a correct assumption to make about all men in literature, especially an “epic”, like The Odyssey. In a book like this, the men act as warriors and heroes, and are seemingly emotionless. What many people don’t realize is that men struggle emotionally too, it’s not only women. Some might think that Odysseus was just a guy who went to war, and stalled to go home afterwards, not even considering his family.
The Odyssey “Pay no attention to appearing.” -André Gide The magical Disney classic Beauty and the Beast begins with an old woman pleading with a cold-hearted prince for shelter one frigid night. The prince is repulsed by her ragged appearance and turns her away.
“The Odyssey” is a book that is compiled of a multitude of other smaller pieces of text in which each correspond with one another. This compilation of texts was written by Homer. Additionally, C.P. Cavafy’s poem,“Ithaka”, illustrates the main morals within Homer’s “The Odyssey”. Overall, both Cavafy’s “Ithaka”, as well as Homer’s “The Odyssey” expound the proposition that life is more about the journey rather than the destination.
Women in the The Odyssey played a intricate role in helping define what the Greeks thought women should be like. During The Odyssey the way Homer Presents the females charters, such as Penelope, Anticlia, and Naussica gives a glimpse into the stereotypes. “In the Homeric epics women seem to have little independence; they are always under the guardian-ship of a man… [but] because women can speak… Homer’s women still manage to exert a significant moral force” (Lefkowitz). The first was Penelope, who was the benevolent and steadfast wife of Odysseus, let Homer convey what the Greeks believed was wife material.

He was away for ten years at Troy and spent the other ten years on his journey back to his native land, Ithaca. Within the epic, author Homer reveals characters of gods and goddesses throughout the poem who impacted the families journey. One importantly, was the goddess of wisdom and war, Athena.
In the Odyssey, I feel as if the Gods role was to function more as spiritual guides and as support for the human of choice. An example being Athena reuniting Odessyus and his son after 20 years, Hermes warning Odysseus of Circes witchcraft, and Circes giving him directions. Yet, I also feel as if they punish for poor behavior as well.
World Literature Paper – Role of Athena and Penelope in The Odyssey Homer’s, The Odyssey is an epic which was written many years ago. At that time, in Ancient Greek society, the dominant role was played by men and the women were considered and given an inferior position. But The Odyssey was often considered a women’s epic because women played an important role. Women in The Odyssey are portrayed as powerful, wise and controlling because they ensure that the illusion of male success will go on - they speak as men through women.
This nine-year conflict pitted the Greeks against the city of Troy, on the western coast of what is now Turkey. The Greeks had finally triumphed, but many would not live to enjoy it. Odysseus’s shipmates were blown far off course, and after a number of perils they reached a small wooded island, where they beached the vessels and gave thought to provisions. Odysseus had noticed a larger island nearby, from which came the sound of bleating goats. This was encouraging to his growling stomach, and he detailed a scouting party and led it to the far shore.
Myrsiadesr compares Penelope’s early recognition in book 19 to a game that only she and Odysseus are playing. Throughout this game only Penelope is aware of it, so she is able to make all of the rules. Odysseus is not aware that his wife recognizes him, before he relieves his identity to her. She is signifying throughout this entire game that she is the one in power. Which is why even after his identity is relieved she continues to test her husband to indicate she is the one in power.
