Oedipus the King by Sophocles is a play about a king trying to fix his city from the terrible things that are happening in it. The question that this essay is going to revolve around is “is
Oedipus a tragic figure or not?” The main things that make Oedipus a tragic figure is that he was left alone by his parents as a baby, he married his biological mother and took over as king, and he killed the late king that happened to be his biological father.
When Oedipus was a child he was left alone by his mother and father, and was adopted by another couple. This makes him a tragic figure because he never knew that the people that raised him were not his biological parents. When Oedipus found out he could not believe it.

Although Oedipus was adopted he still reconnected with his biological mother. He just did not know that she was his mother. Oedipus married his mother and had a wonderful life with her thinking that she was just his wife. He took over as king and ruled over the city. When the priest came to Oedipus seeking help to run the plague out of the city, the only way to stop it was to find the person who murdered the late king before Oedipus and to cast the murderer out of the city forever. In the story Creon (Oedipus’s brother-in-law) told Oedipus and the priest how to get

rid of the plague. He said “We must banish or murder to free ourselves from a murder that blows storms through the city.” (Line 100-101). The late king’s name was Laius, also known as
