Symbolism and Theme in Oedipus Rex Sophocles is one of the many tragedians from Ancient Greece. It is said that he produced over 120 plays but only 7 have survived to present day. Oedipus Rex is one of the most known plays by Sophocles. His ability to incorporate symbolism into the story to portray the theme that, fate overpowers free will, made Oedipus Rex even more of an interesting read. Oedipus’ scars on his feet and his nickname “swollen foot(or ankle)” are a reminder of the horrible prophecy over his life. The scars on his feet are a mark for the bad things he has been through. His name is also a reminder due to Oedipus literally meaning swollen foot in Greek. Oedipus says while speaking to the messenger, “From what did you save me?” (3. 977) “Your ankles should tell you that,” replied the messenger (3. 978). He then says to Oedipus,”That was why you were given the name you bear” (3.980). Later in the story, his scars and his name reveal their significance in the story based on Oedipus’ life.As a child Oedipus’ feet were bound together which could have the meaning of him not being able to escape the prophecy.
