Dr. C. Moorer’s novel not only resonates with those who are downtrodden and are looking to God for help in their endeavors, but also those who are not religious and are searching for success and fulfillment in their lives. In From Failure to Promise – "360 Degrees" Moorer establishes six different ‘tracks’ as it were, that have allowed him to reach his final success, each one having a profound and vital lesson for the reader. The track that conveyed the most helpful life lessons for an incoming college senior was Off Track, because it allows those who are struggling to realize that amidst failure and struggle, comes hope and renewal. Further elaborating on the analogy of a ‘flawed system’, “giving too much care and concern about what people think and say about you can also cause system malfunction” (Moorer 57). Personally, this is an aspect of failure that I have struggled with: the fear of failing has held me hostage from pursuing opportunities, and learning from any mistakes. This society is so focused on status based upon success and comparing status’ that people will always find categorical rankings and groupings to compare, which is why failure is so revered: nobody wants to be looked down upon for not succeeding. I felt that this was far too difficult a task for a college student struggling to pay for tuition, who is uncomfortable doing things outside of immediate influence zone, and who has struggled with loving myself for who I am. After reading I had the epiphany that not only did this man reclaim his destiny after flunking out of college, but he ultimately claimed a victory so profound that it could only point to a heavenly deity. Looking around and seeing that everyone else was succeeding with what seemed to be little effort was not the correct way to view the world. As Moorer illustrated, one cannot compare their lives and successes to others, because everyone has had their triumphs and failures, and the paths that led there were full of turmoil and despair. With the 7 Spheres of Influence, Moorer successfully infiltrated and influenced the first sphere, through my reading of his novel. Just as it was stated, it is much easier to be influenced and to influence the first 3 and possible 4 spheres, but increasingly difficult as the spheres grow. From Failure to Promise has inspired me to create the life goal of widening my sphere of influence to the world, thus making a difference in it. Not only is Dr. C. Moorer
